The patellofemoral grind test is used to detect chondromalacia patella or osteoarthritis.

Performing the Test

  1. Place the patient in the supine position
  2. Push the patella into the trochlear grove (concave area where patella touches the femur) and then ask patient to flex quadriceps muscles
  3. The test is positive if the examiner can feel crepitus or medial/lateral movement of patella
