Assesses for large knee effusions.

Performing the Test

  1. Patient supine, place thumb and index finger on each side of patella and with right hand, compress suprapatellar pouch against femur by placing left hand 15 cm proximal to patella (thumb and index finger on either side of patella), applying pressure and sliding hand toward patella, and maintain that pressure
  2. Positive test: fluid balloons into spaces lateral to the patella
