The pivot test, or Apley's grind test, is used to assess for meniscal tears.

Performing the Test

  1. Position the patient prone
  2. Flex the patient’s knee to 90 degrees, grasping the sole of foot in examiner’s hand and applying a downward pressure while pivoting back and forth
  3. The test is positive if the patient feels pain with pressure and rotation
