The Ortolani test is a screening test used to assess for developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Performing the Test

  1. With the baby supine, flex the knees and fully adduct the hips
  2. Place your fingers over the greater trochanter of each femur and place your thumbs over each lesser trochanter, while stabilizing the hip at the pubic bone with the other hand.
  3. Fully abduct the hips while pushing upward with your fingers
  4. Ortolani sign: as the hip is abducted, a posteriorly displaced femoral head will enter the acetabulum on abduction; positive if palpable
